1.1 Background of the Study
Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry, is renowned for its storytelling, cultural representation, and capacity to address societal issues. It has emerged as a platform for promoting unity in a country characterized by diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural identities (Okafor & Adebayo, 2024). Through narratives that emphasize shared values, cultural coexistence, and collective resilience, Nollywood has the potential to foster harmony among viewers. In Bida South Local Government Area, Niger State, where ethnic and religious diversity is prevalent, Nollywood films are widely consumed. Their influence on promoting unity in such a multicultural setting warrants investigation. This study explores the effectiveness of Nollywood films in promoting unity among the residents of Bida South, focusing on their themes, audience reception, and social impact.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Nigeria continues to grapple with challenges of ethnic and religious divisions, which often hinder national cohesion. Nollywood films, with their wide reach and influence, are uniquely positioned to bridge these divides by showcasing narratives of unity and shared humanity (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). However, the extent to which these films influence viewers in promoting unity, particularly in diverse areas like Bida South, is not well-documented. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the role Nollywood films play in fostering unity among the residents.
